For most people, the Covid vaccine does not cause adverse health effects – but a small percentage experiences chronic symptoms that can last for months or even years.
Yale researchers recently made some discoveries as to why some people experience this condition, which they have called “post -vaccination syndrome” (PVS).
In the early findings, the team recognized “possible immune models” that are unique to people with PVS. The hope is that this discovery will help to enable future treatments and therapies for those affected.
“This work is still in its early stages, and we must prove these findings,” said the study author Akiko Iwasaki, Professor Sterling of Immunobiology at Yale Medical School, in a press release .
“But this is giving us some hope that there may be something we can use to diagnose and treat PV on the road.”
Symptoms of post -vaccination syndrome
People with this condition can suffer from excessive fatigue, exercise intolerance, brain fog, insomnia and dizziness, according to Yale scholars.
These usually develop within one or two days of vaccination and can worsen over time.
“It is clear that some individuals are experiencing important challenges after vaccination. Our responsibility as scientists and clinics is to hear their experiences, to strictly investigate the underlying causes, and seek ways to help,” said contemporary author Harlan Krumholz, Professor of Cardiology in YSM, in omission.
“After vaccination syndrome is real, and is found [to occur] Of the many vaccines, including Covid, ”said Dr. Marc Siegel, Professor of Medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News Senior Medical Analyst for Fox News Digital.
What did the study found
The researchers analyzed blood samples from 42 study participants who suffered symptoms of PV and 22 which do not.
Those with symptoms showed that they had lower levels of two types of white blood cells. People with PV who had never had Covid also had lower levels of antibodies against the SARS-COV-2 spike protein, likely because they tend to have fewer doses of vaccines, according to the release.
“After vaccination syndrome is real, and is found [to occur] by many vaccines. “
Dr. Marc Siegel
“Fewer vaccine doses and no viral infection means that the body’s immune system has had little chance of developing protection against the virus,” researchers said.
Some of the people with PVS also had higher levels of SARS-COV-2 spike protein, which enables the virus to penetrate and infect host cells. This has also been associated with a higher risk of developing long covid.
“We do not know if the point protein level is causing chronic symptoms because there were other participants with PVs who did not have any measurable peak protein – but it could be a mechanism that relies on this syndrome,” Iwasaki said.
In addition to raised proteins of points, other factors can increase the risk of post -vaccination syndrome. These include autoimmunity, tissue damage and reactivation of Epstein-Barr (EBV) virus, researchers writes.
“Akiko Iwasaka is a world -renowned immunologist in Yale who has widely studied Covid (and Covid vaccines),” Siegel said.
“In this new study, she reports that in a very small percentage of those who received Covid vaccines (and have experienced prolonged side effects), may have the presence of continuous peak proteins,” Siegel confirmed.
“They can also undergo immune disruption, which takes the form of heights in inflammatory immune cells (CD8 and TN alpha) and a decrease in cells that help resolve inflammation and infection (CD4 auxiliary cells).”
Researchers agreed that more studies are essential to guide diagnosis and treatment.
“We are just starting to make progress in understanding PVs,” Krumholz said. “Interventiondo medical intervention carries some risk and it is important to admit that unfavorable events can occur with vaccines.”
“Our focus should remain in the sense of what these people are experiencing through rigorous science and addressing the needs of those who are affected with compassion and an open mind.”
Siegel agreed, adding, “This should be studied further in understanding how common the side effects of the elongated Covid vaccine are and how to predict them and treat them.”
